Title:
Post-baby exercise prevents bone loss
Item:
New mothers who are breastfeeding should exercise to prevent bone loss.
Women lose a lot of calcium to their babies, who need the mineral to grow.
But a lack of calcium can lead to a loss of bone density and an increase in the risk of osteoporosis.
However, weight-bearing or aerobic exercises can help stimulate bone growth and keep the skeleton healthy.
Nutritionists at the University of Carolina measured the bone density of 20 women between one and five months after they had given birth. Those who did no exercise lost about 7 per cent of the bone density in their lower spine during the study period.
But women who did strengthening exercise such as Pilates and workouts such as walking or jogging three days a week had stronger bones. They also regained their figures faster, even if they paid no special attention their diet.
